Enjoying yourself the key to living to 105

A great- great-grandmother who believes in living life to the full celebrated her 105th birthday yesterday. .

Shantaben Velji, who lives at Sanctuary Care's Asra House Care Home, in Belgrave, Leicester, marked the milestone with a party at the home.

She was joined by four of her grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Asked what her secret to reaching such a grand age was, Shantaben said: "Just being yourself and enjoying life."

She said: "The most precious moments have been with my children and seeing them grow up."

Shantaben grew up in Dhurkot, in India. She remembers the partition of India in 1947, and moving to Kenya with her late husband. She moved to Leicester in 1971, where she lived in Highfields, before moving to Asra House last June.

Her granddaughter, Neeta, who lives in Syston, said: "She is so caring and loving.

"Just a couple of days ago, we visited her and she said to make sure we got home safely.

"Mentally, she is very alert and she remembers everything – she is a very strong and independent lady."
